1. Keep grades below 10% (20% for short distances).
2. Grades of 3 to 5% are desirable.
3. Avoid locating on 60% or greater slopes.
4. Avoid rock out-cropping and swampy places.
5. Stay out of stream beds (see filter strip table).
6. Cross streams at right angles.
7. Slope stream approach toward stream.
8. Drain as necessary according to slope-see tables.
9. Use rocks, logs, brush at lower end of water bar to break force.
